Insight Description

If you’re a family member or carer supporting someone on the NDIS, you already know how much thought goes into every decision. Choosing a NDIS provider is one of the biggest decisions. The support they receive each week shapes daily routines, progress toward goals, and how safe and supported the person you care for feels at home.

It’s natural to want to help, and your support can make a real difference. At the same time, the NDIS is built on choice and control, which means the final decision always belongs to the participant.  Finding that balance isn't always easy, and you're not alone if it feels tricky at times.

This guide walks through practical ways you can support the process, respect the participant’s choice, and make the whole experience feel far less overwhelming. If any NDIS terms come up that you’d like explained, the MySolas Plan Navigator covers them in plain English.

Why family support matters when choosing a NDIS provider

Choosing the right providers involves a lot of moving parts. There are services to research, agreements to read, meet and greets to attend, and plenty of questions to ask. For many participants, having a trusted family member or carer alongside makes the process feel much more manageable.

You also bring something no website can offer: a deep understanding of the person you support. You often know their routines, their communication preferences, and the little things that help them feel comfortable. Sharing that knowledge, with their permission, helps providers understand what genuinely good support looks like for them. This is what family support in the NDIS is about, working together so the participant can make choices with confidence.

Respecting choice and control

Choice and control sit at the heart of the NDIS, and they belong to the participant. The most helpful thing you can do as a family member or carer is support the participant to make the decision rather than making it for them. Provider choices work best when they’re made with the participant, not for them.

In practice, that might mean asking what matters most to them before sharing your own thoughts, presenting a few provider options side by side rather than a recommending just one, and giving them time and space to respond in the way that works for them. Every situation is different, and some participants may want more input from you than others. Checking in about how involved they’d like you to be is a simple way to keep ensure the decision remains theirs.

Practical ways you can help

Once you’re clear on your role, there are plenty of practical ways you can support the process.

Build a shortlist together

You don’t need to compare every provider in Australia. A shortlist of three or four is usually enough, and it takes less time to put together than you might think. On MySolas, you can search service providers by location, support speciality and verification status, and compare them side by side. Every provider on MySolas is verified before they’re listed, and the MySolas Verified badge shows they’ve met the platform’s vetting standards.

Come along to meet and greets

A conversation tells you more than an hour spent reading a website. If the participant would like you there, join the meet and greet, listen to the questions the provider asks, and pay attention to how they communicate with the participant. Good providers take the time to understand the participant’s goals before talking about their services. Afterwards, jot down impressions while they’re fresh. When you’re comparing a few providers later, those notes can make it much easier to compare your options.

Help with the paperwork

Service agreements are legally binding, so it’s worth reading them together carefully. Look closley at cancellation notice periods, billing arrangements, what happens if staff or a support worker is unavailable, and how unused hours are managed. If anything is unclear, ask questions before signing. A trusted provider will explain their terms in plain language and take your questions seriously.

Reducing overwhelm, for both of you

Supporting someone else’s decisions takes time and energy, especially when you’re juggling your own responsibilities.  The decision-making process becomes much more manageable when it's broken into small steps: understand the participants plan first, build a shortlist, have the conversations, then decide together at the participant’s pace. There’s no need to rush and taking a little longer to find the right fit is almost always worth it. You can also lean on the professionals around you. A support coordinator or local area coordinator (LAC) can help you and the participant understand what the plan covers and which services best fit their goals and support needs.

If the search still feels overwhelming, MySolas Match can carry much of it for you. It’s a free, guided matching service for participants, families, carers and support coordinators. You and the participant share their support needs and preferences in a short online form, and a real person, rather than an automated algorithm, connects you with trusted and verified providers.

It’s also important to look after yourself along the way. Carer Gateway, the Australian Government’s support service for carers, offers free counselling, peer support and practical help, because supporting someone else starts with looking after yourself.

When you see things differently

Sometimes you and the participant won’t agree on a provider, and that’s okay. If that happens, come back to the goals in their NDIS plan and talk about which option supports them best. It can also help to suggest a trial period, then check in together after a few weeks to see to see whether the provider is the right fit.

A provider who looks perfect on paper may not feel right to the person receiving the support, and their comfort matters most. Keeping the conversation open, without pressure, means the decision stays theirs and your relationship stays strong.

Make the next decision together

Choosing a NDIS provider is a big decision, but it doesn’t have to be a stressful one. With a clear understanding of your role, a simple process and the right tools, you can support the participant while keeping the choice firmly in their hands.

MySolas was built to make the process easier for the whole support network. Create your free MySolas account to search and compare verified providers, ask questions on the social feed, learn from the real experiences of other participants and families through MySolas Insights, and connect with suitable providers through MySolas Match.
